Robust self-assembly using highly designable structures

چکیده

Self-assembly creates structures through a statistical exploration of many possibilities. In some cases, these explorations give rise to a few highly designable structures that can be formed in exceptionally many ways. Using such structures for self-assembly tasks is a general approach to improving their reliability. This design principle can be applied to a variety of situations, including molecular devices and coordinated behaviours from collections of autonomous robots.

Universal criterion for designability of heteropolymers

Proteins are an example of heteropolymers able to self-assemble in specific target structures. The self-assembly of designed artificial heteropolymers is still, to the best of our knowledge, not possible with control over the single chain self-assembling properties comparable to what natural proteins can achieve. What artificial heteropolymers lacks compared to bio-heteropolymers that grants th...

Janus Nematic Colloids with Designable Valance

Generalized Janus nematic colloids based on various morphologies of particle surface patches imposing homeotropic and planar surface anchoring are demonstrated. By using mesoscopic numerical modeling, multiple types of Janus particles are explored, demonstrating a variety of novel complex colloidal structures. We also show binding of Janus particles to a fixed Janus post in the nematic cell, wh...

Geometry Selects Highly Designable Structures

By enumerating all sequences of length 20, we study the designability of structures in a twodimensional Hydrophobic-Polar (HP) lattice model in a wide range of inter-monomer interaction parameters. We find that although the histogram of designability depends on interaction parameters, the set of highly designable structures is invariant. So in the HP lattice model the High Designability should ...

Designability and Thermal Stability of Protein Structures

Only about 1,000 qualitatively different protein folds are believed to exist in nature. Here, we review theoretical studies which suggest that some folds are intrinsically more designable than others, i.e. are lowest energy states of an unusually large number of sequences. The sequences associated with these folds are also found to be unusually thermally stable. The connection between highly de...

Laser printing hierarchical structures with the aid of controlled capillary-driven self-assembly.

Capillary force is often regarded as detrimental because it may cause undesired distortion or even destruction to micro/nanostructures during a fabrication process, and thus many efforts have been made to eliminate its negative effects. From a different perspective, capillary force can be artfully used to construct specific complex architectures. Here, we propose a laser printing capillary-assi...
